An interesting sequence of letters, written by Lucy
Maud Montgomery early in the century was found in
1956 among the papers of Ephraim Weber who was
living in the West. Now lodged in the National
Archives in Ottawa, the letters reproduced here exactly
as they were written, form a fascinating footnote to the
history of Canadian letters.
These letters are of special interest to all readers of the
famous Anne of Green Gables books for they span the
period during which Lucy Maud Montgomery
conceived, plotted, wrote, edited and sold her first and
most famous book, Anne of Green Gables. But they
have an intrinsic charm and wit which can be enjoyed by
every one, whether or not they have ever read a
sentence of the Anne books. They reveal a lively,
original and poetic personality. Her style and her
inimitable reaction to life's comedies and tragedies give
these letters a measure of literary immortality. In her
correspondence with such a "kindred spirit" as
Ephraim Weber she found a new intellectual freedom
and a salubrious escape from the irritations of every
day life. These letters are part of an enduring
friendship that lasted for forty years and greatly
enriched both lives.
