Early Prince Edward Island
Probate Records, 1786 to 1850
Stories of Early Islanders
Linda Jean Nicholson
Early Prince Edward Island Probate Records uncovers the rich
reserves of information hidden in early Island wills, administrations
and other estate documents.  These documents are brimming with
untold stories, and little known facts about early Island residents and
land owners.

The author spent over four years combing through the over 2,500
original documents that comprise the early probate records.  She
abstracted all the names, dates, places, occupations, relationships and
stories contained in these early records.  The information was then
organized into more than 920 estates, arranged alphabetically by the
name of the deceased.  At the end of the volume is a 40-page
every-name index with over 8,000 entries.

This is more than a research guide.  The book tells the stories of
early Islanders at a time from which few records regarding the
common man survive.  Take, for example, the Estate of John
Ferguson.  His sister Jannet wrote to the Probate Judge in 1854 and
shared the following story, "We Jannet Ferguson, sister to the late
John Ferguson of Georgetown, Blacksmith, and Peter Ferguson,
husband of the said Jannet Ferguson of Georgetown Royalty make
oath and say that previous to our leaving Scotland . . . John Ferguson
was, we believe, married to the late Mrs. Jane Ferguson (whose
maiden name was McPhee) by whom he had two children, Donald and
Jessie. . ."

Early Prince Edward Island Probate Records is the first and only
complete reference guide to the pre1851 estate documents.   It also
includes an introduction to the early probate records, the probate
court, and early Island probate laws.  This volume is an essential
addition to the library of anyone interested in Island history or
genealogy.
