Reflections on the Art of Alex Colville
Frank Ledwell
"Marshall McLuhan, the late Canadian media
and communications guru, once characterized
abstract art as do-it-yourself art.  The painting
provides colours and shapes, he observed, and
the viewer creates the picture.  Although Alex
Colville is by no means an abstractionist, his art
tends to be so technically perfect and
aesthetically distanced it strikes me as leaving as
much room for the viewer's imagination as does
that of the abstract painter.  That is why I am so
grateful to Colville's art for inspiring, challenging,
and freeing up my participating poetic
imagination, thus enabling this collection."

"The most successful poetry in this collection slips
[the painting's] moorings and becomes an
achievement in its own right."
