In Awe of a
Wandererlust
Yarns and Poems by
Captain Rick Ashton
Gathered here are the sayings, stories and antics taken
from the experiences of Captain Rick Ashton and his past
and present shipmates from over thirty-seven years in the
Canadian Coast Guard.  Captain Ashton weaves these
stories into his sometimes rough and rugged poetry and
shares the feelings of the sailors who experienced them.

Included is a brief glossary defining nautical terms used in
Captain Ashton's poems.

These poems create a world of familiarity for those not
familiar with the sea with its infinite roads to adventures
and fantasies.

From "The Wreck of the Sally B.":

With the drizzle came a squall,
followed by half a gale,
I cursed that moon for I did not have,
strength to tend the sail.
The sea came over the bulwarks,
I was washed about on my back,
the moon, Abigail and Milby were gone,
the night a perilous black.

The "Sally B" tossed and vaulted
for another day and a night,
I felt I was near my end for sure
as I considered my miserable plight.
Then it came, a horrendous crash,
a grinding, a ripping of wood,
we were on the rocks, land at least,
I hung on to what I could.

We pounded on that hidden shoal,
the poor old "Sally B.",
began to break and tear apart,
dismembered in the sea.
Into the water once again I went,
I glimpsed the breaking surf,
with my fading life force I clawed my way
toward the illusive turf.

Gasping for life, into a void,
my bewildered mind did slide,
and before the blackness swallowed my fate,
I felt Milby at my side.
