Steaming up the Coast
Yarns and Poems by
Captain Rick Ashton
This is the second book containing sayings, stories and antics
taken from the experiences of Captain Rick Ashton and his
past and present shipmates from over thirty-seven years in the
Canadian Coast Guard.

Captain Ashton weaves these stories into his sometimes rough
and rugged poetry and shares the feelings of the sailors who
experienced them.

At the end of the book are brief definitions of nautical terms
used in Captain Ashton's poems.

These poems create a world of familiarity for those not familiar
with the sea with its infinite roads to adventures and fantasies.

Excerpt from "Lost Luggage":

We were in the Gulf, north of PEI.
A guy came on board by helicopter, from Ottawa;
then to leave a week or so later
with others, on their way ashore;
his luggage, on top of the pile in the cargo net.
“Almost too windy for flying,” the Pilot told the Mate
just before he lifted off the deck.

The chopper was quite high in the air
but not high enough that you couldn't see the “Suit”
his hands and nose pressed against the side window.
You could just about make out his tonsils.

Not only did his suitcases jettison themselves out of the net
but …- blue sky and white fluffy clouds their background -
one opened, somehow
allowing his clothes and papers… and things
to flutter like confettee.
Yes, his pants, shirts, socks and underwear twittered
in the air like drunken birds
flapping their way towards the water and icepans.

But not all was a twitter;
forty pounders unravelled themselves from his apparel
plummeted like bombs.

One hears all the time
of people losing their luggage when flying.
I doubt many actually get to see it go.
