Between Two Cultures
The Alex Campbell Years
Wayne MacKinnon
The 1960's and 70's were times of tumultuous change
in Prince Edward Island.  The last vestiges of the old
order were being swept away, and the Island faced an
uncertain future.  It became one of the liveliest
political eras in the history of the province.  At the
centre of it all was Alex Campbell, the Island's
longest-serving premier and its most important
political figure of the 20th century.  Described as a
revolutionary politician, he sought to achieve a
balance between two conflicting cultures, and in the
process, laid the foundations for the modernization of
Prince Edward Island.

Between Two Cultures looks at the major issues that
shaped the province and its people.

"We in this province, are caught between these two cultures.  The culture of the past, with its problems of
back-breaking labour, disease, child mortality, premature aging, inadequate medical facilities and limited
educational opportunities, and the culture of the future as represented by modern industrial mechanized states. . .
We must be careful not to over-romanticize the past with the result that we only recollect or think of the finer
aspects of an earlier Island life and reject or refuse to recall the more grim aspects of living in Prince Edward
Island a century or less ago.  Similarly, we must not forget that many Islanders today are not leading a
particularly rewarding life. . .
What we must endeavour to do is to identify those advances which have helped in the past and can help in the
future to eliminate a number of the debilitating and crushing problems we face and, at the same time, not lead
ourselves into the mindless repetitive and de-humanizing aspects of the affluent society.  Balance, to my mind, is
the key word."
