"It seems only fitting that the first Island locality to receive electricity should be the provincial capital,
Charlottetown.  Incorporated in 1855, the city was the Island's largest population centre as well as the
administrative and economic hub.  Since 1854, Charlottetown had been partially lit by gas lamps installed and
tended by the Charlottetown Gas Light Company.  Gas lighting was not entirely satisfactory, however, and in
1884, the City invited the Royal Electric Engineering and Construction Company of Montreal to submit a bid for
lighting Charlottetown's streets with electricity.  Royal Electric's tender was accepted and on December 19,
1885, Charlottetown got its first electric lights."
