Abegweit Dynasty
1899-1954
The Story of the
Abegweit Amateur Athletic Association
H. Charles Ballem
"The Abegweit Amateur Athletic Association was the main
instrument in the early development of amateur sport in Prince
Edward Island.  After its incorporation in 1899, it developed
teams and individual athletes that ranked with the best in
Canada in the early part of the twentieth century.   When the
Abegweit Association was formed, there was no governing
body for amateur sport in the Province.  The multi-sport club
filled the administrative void.

The history of the Abegweit Club is colourful, filled with the
exploits of Island greats in the field of sport, including teams,
individual performers, and administrators.  Their stories have
become legend, and have been told in bits and pieces over the
years, but never before in a complete record, and in the
context of their times.  This book, the product of Charlie
Ballem's years of painstaking research, knits the whole
Abegweit story together, lays it out for generations to come,
and provides us with a document that has been missing from
our social heritage.  Sport has been an important element in
our social fabric for the past one hundred years;
Abegweit
Dynasty
will enrich our understanding of this part of our past."
