More Than Just a Game
One Hundred Years of Organized Sport in
Prince Edward Island,
1850-1950
Charlie Ballem
Prince Edward Island sports historian Charlie Ballem chronicles
a century of organized sport in Prince Edward Island, from the
Island and Maritime playing fields to the ultimate athletic
achievement in amateur sport: the Olympic Games.

He tells how sport progressed from a pastime open only to
Charlottetown's gentry, with cricket on the lawns of the city's
swankier establishments, through to a time when sport became a
common thread, binding together Islanders from all walks of life.
The book recounts a few of the more harrowing tales of P.E.I.
hockey teams leaving the Island in the dead of winter. And
included in its pages are stories of the Island's more famous
sporting figures, athletes such as Bill Halpenny, P.E.I.'s first
athlete to compete in the Olympics in 1904 and 1912; Michael
Thomas, an Island Mi'kmaq, the best and most highly publicized
distance runner in Eastern Canada in 1912; and world-famous
Joe O'Brien, a harness-racing driver from Alberton who could
communicate with horses by the way he held the reins.

More Than Just a Game includes over a hundred historical
photos, collected from archives and personal collections of
athletes and their descendants.

The book was co-published by Sport P.E.I.    Proceeds benefit
Kid Sport, a program that helps 300 young Islanders participate
in athletics.
